Elbow dislocation is one of the most
common bone injuries in adults as well as children. It is
usually caused by a fall on an outstretched hand. Fractures
or ligament injuries may be present.
|
 |
- The typical symptoms are:
- Sudden onset of intense pain
- Swelling
- Difficulty in bending and
straightening elbow joint
- There may also be difficulty in
turning the forearm to make the palm face-up or
face-down.
|
 |
- The diagnosis is based on the
history, symptoms, and physical examination.
- An X-Ray of the elbow confirms the diagnosis.
|
 |
- The dislocated bone should be put
back in place by a physician as soon as possible. This
procedure is called "reduction".
- General or local anesthesia is
necessary for reduction.
- After reduction, the patient may
need to wear a splint for a few weeks.
- If the elbow is fractured, surgery may be required.
